Kevin Dean, executive director of Literacy Mid-South, was recently recognized at the U.S. Conference on Adult Literacy, where he was presented with the Ruth J. Colvin and Frank C. Laubach Award for Excellence in Community-Based Adult Literacy.

“We are pleased to honor Kevin Dean at the U.S. Conference on Adult Literacy as a leader in the adult literacy field, recognized for his innovative strategies that have made Literacy Mid-South a vibrant and sustainable organization deeply engaged in its community,” said Kevin Morgan, president and chief executive officer of ProLiteracy. “Kevin and the other award recipients at USCAL represent the determination and spirit of so many who work in adult literacy to impact the lives of adult learners, and we are grateful for their dedication.”

Dean was recognized for working tirelessly since 2011 to significantly improve the organization’s reputation and financial well-being and for launching several successful new programs, partnerships and events.

“I am honored to be recognized by an organization I hold in such high regard,” Dean said. “There’s no doubt the accomplishments we’ve achieved for Literacy Mid-South over the past few years couldn’t have been completed without the dedication of our entire staff. I accept this award for each of them.”

Whitney Harmon, Literacy Mid-South board chair, nominated Dean for the award.

“Kevin would be the first to tell you that his goal is to put Literacy Mid-South out of business,” Harmon said. “I believe that this statement speaks volumes about his dedication to those he seeks to serve and about his tireless efforts at Literacy Mid-South to lead every single person in the Mid-South to the ability to read.”
