    Abilene Christian University is a private university, founded in 1906 in Abilene, Texas, offering an exceptional education to about 4,600 students annually from nearly every state and 43 nations. As a leader in exploring how mobile technology can benefit education, ACU was reported as the first university in the nation to further education through the use of the new generation of smartphone technologies, offering all incoming freshman classes a free Apple iPhone or iPod Touch. This decision was the result of a study to find out the viability of iPhone and iPod for academic purposes. In February, 2009, ACU hosted more than 400 academics and technologists from 31 states and 8 countries for its first ConnectEd Summit on mobile learning. ACU continues to receive recognition for technology and innovation excellence, receiving awards such as the CIO 100 Award, Alcatel-Lucent Dynamic Enterprise Award, ACUTA Institutional Excellence Award and Apple Distinguished Program, and many others.
