Behind the Book is a non-profit that creates customized in-school reading promotion programs within NYC public schools. In partnership with teachers, Behind the Book identifies books that speak to urban youth and creates immersive curricular units by bringing the authors of those books into the classroom. Through a series of workshops, authors discuss their book and teach a genre of writing, encouraging students to see themselves as readers and writers and ultimately guiding them in the creation and publication of their own class book.

Each program occurs during school hours in a small classroom setting, is taught as part of the class curriculum, meets the Common Core standards, incorporates multiple author visits, and includes book donations to every student and the school library.
