  • Blending Structured and Unstructured Data to Develop Healthcare Insights

    HIMSS

This topic is vital (not sexy); the paper, in turn, is designed for a broader audience to demonstrate how "blending" unstructured and structured data improves healthcare -- esp. in creating new care insights. "Big data" gets headlines but more important is the great undercurrent of unstructured data -- now 80% of all data, growing faster than anyone's ability to manage it, and becoming an ever-rising flood. "Big data" gets headlines but more important is the great undercurrent of unstructured data -- now 80% of all data, growing faster than anyone's ability to manage it, and becoming an ever-rising flood. Newly-matured technologies (NLP, machine learning) help manage these growing data volumes. So we target the basics, offer 3 case studies and make recommendations for using pilot projects that weave these data types to solve complex patient care issues.

  • Disaster Preparedness for HIEs: "HIE Planning Meets ‘Super-Storm Sandy’ Realities"

    HIMSS

A review of HIE-level responses (New York + New Jersey) during Superstorm Sandy. Findings: There is evolving but minimal research and planning on how to best link HIEs with Disaster Response teams in disaster recovery. At this key period in communities, everyone -- hospitals, clinics, providers, first responders – will need tough-to-get access to critical clinical information, above all healthcare providers and first responders. (Part II of study will be completed in early 2014.)
