Lee Goldberg put together one of the first books to offer practical advice for engineers and managers who want or need to incorporate environmental issues into the design process. My contribution (Chapter 10) focused on the value of including life cycle thinking into the design process and the need for tools that integrate compliance and DfE in a way that is useful to designers.

This was a pilot project to test the feasibility of using solar-electric systems to provide reliable power for some of the 400+ schools run by the Beaconhouse School System throughout Pakistan and India. Beaconhouse is a remarkable institution, providing a world-class, education based on Montesouri principles, adapted to regional needs. Solar power promises to help the Beaconhouse campuses become less dependent on expensive diesel generators which are currently needed to keep the facilities'…

Solar power promises to help the Beaconhouse campuses become less dependent on expensive diesel generators which are currently needed to keep the facilities' lights, fans and computers operating during the power outages which occur on a near-daily basis throughout the region. It was a pleasure to work with Msrs. Suleman, Soail, and Raza, our Pakistan engineering team who did much of the in-country research. It was also exceptionally rewarding to spend time at the Beaconhouse campus in Lahore where I had the privilige of meeting many members of the school's dedicated staff and the wonderful children they serve.
