In planning and design, we’re obsessed with the idea of community. The word means a lot of different things to different people, but we believe there are opportunities to forge new connections between strangers, create bonds between people and place, and encourage the exercise of goodness in the spaces and places that citizens of a community call their own.

We sought to understand how strangers become engaged members of their neighborhood, foster interaction, and embrace a sense of pride and belonging in a physical place. Our interests, motivation, health and happiness are inextricably tied to the feeling that we belong to a greater community that shares common interests and aspirations, and it's important to understand what role that physical and emotional community plays.
