When I first read this question, it seemed that it was about how the AI industry could cultivate confidence from the public. I cover AI as a news anchor in Washington, DC, and making sure the public has confidence (trust) in the industry is imperative. After all, Congress is looking at regulations and some of their decisions will be based on their constitutes concerns. First, recognize that there is both a fear and curiosity about the technology. Provide educational resources and demonstrations to demystify your work. Please use terms and phrases everyone understands, and if you need to say something technical, provide definitions and context. Always answer people's questions thoughtfully. Those efforts will pay off within the industry too.

I can tell you people are growing more and more frustrated with how their data is being handled. If you find yourself in a situation where you're unsure about whether data is protected, err on the side of caution over AI innovation. I NEVER have once ended a news segment on this subject by saying, "but they had the best of intentions."

This is what I would tell interns today: 1) Make authentic friends. I saw too many interns place value on people based on what they could do for them. People see through that. 2) Keep in contact. You can reach out to ask how they are and update them on your own endeavors just a couple times a year to keep the relationship going. 3) Contact your heroes. You have a golden opportunity as a student to reach out to CEOs, celebs, and other rising stars to ask questions. Not all will respond, but you're more likely to get a response while still a student.

We have to make sure we are using AI to supplement human creativity, not replace it. I think about an author who spends years perfecting their craft to come up with an incredibly captivating novel. I would want to read every word they wrote with care and soak in the story. Then I think about someone coming up with a quick plot and asking AI to write the story. Perhaps they couldn't even bother to read it themselves. Why would I spend my time reading that novel at all? But there is a balance. For those without the means, AI can give them access to a copywriter or marketing strategy. But if you have the means, go to the experts. Let the experts us AI in a way that supplements what they do. Always approach it as a way to work together.

Disconnect. Seriously. Often times we gravitate to more technology to help solve our problems, especially when overwhelmed. But we should often do the opposite. We cannot have balance if we never step away. I make room in my day -- every day -- for at least one offline activity: I read books made of paper, listen to music on a vinyl record, write with an ink pen in a journal, or play an actual piano.

I cover Artificial Intelligence for broadcast news in Washington, DC. One of the major issues I’ve reported on is bias despite best intentions. Just knowing how to create a resume that is easily read by AI may eliminate great candidates who don’t have access to this knowledge. Even those who know AI will read their resumes aren’t sure if their format is AI friendly. Many people who excel at interviews conducted by chatbots (and in the future, digital humans) have had coaching or practice not accessible to others. People who can afford a career coach will have a leg up. Hiring managers need to find ways to make sure the best candidates are getting a chance, not just those with the means.
