- Thesis: Forces in the Brownian World: An Experimental Thermal Ratchet.
Designed and built the first optical thermal ratchet (a concept first put forward by Richard Feynman). This demonstrates the seemingly paradoxical ability to extract concerted momentum out of a random and chaotic environment. A notable extension of this work is the Parrondo’s paradox in financial theory
