Here's how you can stand out as a mechanical engineering candidate.

Something to consider is highlighting any mechanical skills especially those not related to just what you learned in education. For example, as a hiring manager, I would hire Mechanical Engineers who used to live on farms and helped out fixing the farm equipment, people who like to tinker with cars, people who did handyman projects, people who knew how to weld, etc.. These additional skills and knowledge goes a long way during an interview so add them to your resume and talk about them during an interview. Good luck!!!

You're a new Mechanical Engineering graduate. How can you ensure your skills are up to par?

What skills? They do not teach mechanical engineering skills in the education system. They just teach theory and not product design, product fabrication or product manufacturing which are what the industry wants from their mechanical engineers.

How can you stay ahead of the curve in mechanical design?

Figure out how to utilize AI to create 3D CAD models. That would be a major step in the right direction. I should be able to say “create a protrusion 30mm diameter x 10mm high a this surface at this point and done”. Okay, simplified example but just think if you could conceptualize a geometry and the 3D CAD software could just create it. Wow, would that be cool or what?

You're a mechanical engineer. How can you create complex designs that meet industry standards?

Before you even start the complex design, you better have a thorough understanding of all the industry standards!

What do you do if you lack the key qualities employers look for in entry-level Mechanical Engineers?

It depends on the field you would like to enter. What problems are they trying to solve, what fabrication methods are utilized to make similar products either in the same industry or similar industry and learn all about those processes/materials/part design, and reach out to experienced mechanical engineers in that industry who might be able to mentor you and/or provide you with assistance. Your contacts are one of the most vital things you can leverage to find a job!!!

You’re a mechanical engineer with a new project. What devices should you rely on?

You are the device that you should rely on to develop any product. The rest of the devices are just aids as in the name CAD computer AIDED design however without you driving the design aids, they are worthless!
