“Alex Margulis was a postdoctoral fellow in my lab at Pfizer from 2005 – 2008. I can recommend Alex as a very hard-working and dedicated scientist. He has excellent analytical and problem solving skills. While he was in the lab, Alex tackled many technically challenging projects, including the generation and propagation of human primary mast cells, and the establishment of 3-dimensional culture systems to study collagen gel contraction. Establishing these systems required Alex to painstakingly optimize and troubleshoot numerous technical details, but this is the type of challenge that Alex enjoys. He was able to successfully establish systems in which human primary smooth muscle cells or fibroblasts were embedded in collagen gel systems, as single cell cultures or in co-culture with mast cells. Cellular activation led to contraction and shrinkage of the gels, associated with pro-fibrotic changes mimicking aspects of tissue remodeling. Alex’s work led to two first-author publications and a second-author paper. Alex is very collaborative, a strong team player, and interested in learning and growing as a scientist. He would make a strong contribution to innovative research initiatives.”
