Hey LinkedIn Family! Come closer; I see this as an opportunity to connect the mentee and mentor even more and not necessarily according to plan. Plans and progressions are great metrics, and we NEED metrics, and we also need compassion which equals empathy. Oftentimes, we attempt to "will things through" which can sometimes manifest, but willpower doesn't last; yep, I said it. David Desteno notes ("Emotional Sucess: The Power of Gratitude, Compassion and Pride") the more you use willpower for the same matter, the less effective it becomes. Boundaries are often framed in the realm of difficulty or frustration, hence, the "difficult coworker". Walk with me here; whether it be the ubiquitous sports analogy or its close cousin working out, boundaries matter and are helpful. Ex: whatever the sport (basketball, football, baseball, tennis, you name it), boundaries help set the rulings, denote clear lines of demarcation, and while argued about, are generally accepted by all. In other words, boundaries are standards. If a ball goes out of bounds, we accept it (maybe with instant replay lol), but my point is, it's a standard.
