Activities and Societies: Only Latina in her class and in the department at the time. Marta has been a ground breaker and ahead of her time as a woman of color in understanding the connections between the disparities in her community and the environmental pollutants that harm us all. The last part of the major is a 20-unit upper-division outside concentration where students complete courses from one or more UCSB departments or programs relating to their emphasis.

Led a collaborative effort to transition an innovative one-week summer institute at UC Santa Cruz that convened leading activists from diverse sectors in the Spanish-speaking Americas to strengthen social movements in the face of globalization. Worked with Institute founder, Prof. Manuel Pastor, and a representative body of Institute participants to create a new iteration of the Institute focused on providing ongoing support to LA-based transnational activists. Integrated work of the Institute to the academic formation of students interested in addressing poverty in a global context by partnering them with LA-based transnational activists. Organized collaborative programs at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center for environmental, LGBT, indigenous, hometown associations, women's rights, migrant and labor rights social movement leaders. DLC partners later leveraged the vibrant labor research, grassroots capacity building, and cross-sector convening power to ground it into the Institute for Transnational Social Change.
