About

Almost 20 years experience analyzing, developing, and implementing sustainability, climate action, and conservation strategies. Matt brings deep experience across sectors and scale, ranging from hyperlocal, place-based projects to national and international initiatives. He is a coalition builder, knowing that systemic change requires collaboration built on trust, communication, and shared understanding. Most of all, Matt is driven by action that results in a more resilient economy, healthier environment, and equitable outcomes.

Matt currently serves as Senior VP of Programs for the Student Conservation Association. Matt most recently served as Chief of Sustainability for the City of Cleveland. Working on all things urban sustainability and climate, Matt led the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative to create a thriving green city on a blue lake.

This position followed completion of a U.S. Fulbright Fellowship in Mauritius, where he researched climate change impacts and adaptation governance. Prior to receiving this grant, he served four years with the US Department of Energy, the first two years as a Presidential Management Fellow. At DOE he worked largely on green building and climate change, serving as Chair of the Interagency Sustainability Working Group to make green building standard practice throughout the Federal government.

Matt has also worked in energy management consulting, ecological water purification, and for conservation organizations. He has bachelor degrees in Industrial Engineering and Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters in Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University.
