MIMICS (Mobile Interactive Mirror-Neuron Stimulating Improvisational Cueing System) uses an evidence-based approach that treats the social-emotional and communication challenges associated with autism spectrum disorder. The most important aspect of this approach is its core principle: avatar-mediated social-communicative and/or educational interactions. MIMICS uses remotely prompted-communication technology (such as Bluetooth) to serve as a social medium between two participants in a communicative exchange: the sender and the receiver. Further, by incorporating animated avatars into an augmentative and assistive communication approach, the computer device’s screen encourages people with autism to attend to faces for social-communicative cues. There is, in fact, research that shows video modeling is an effective tool for teaching people with autism. But MIMICS is different: it uses interactive video self-modeling, using animated, personalized avatars: digital characters which incorporate faces of the user, his family, or other people in his life. In a way, MIMICS avatars serve as electronic diplomats, which pique the interest of people with autism and, thus, stimulate dialogue between neurotypical and autistic individuals.

This event brought together a remarkable community of researchers, practitioners, and thought leaders, fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation.
As I prepared for my presentation, I reflected on my journey in the realm of instrumentive AI and its transformative potential in speech and language therapy. My presentation aimed to illuminate the tangible ways in which instrumentive AI is reshaping healthcare and education, focusing on its capacity to augment and empower professionals. By delving into real-world applications from my own work, I hoped to inspire a thoughtful dialogue about the ethical considerations and the crucial role of human oversight in deploying AI technologies.
Throughout the event, I was struck by the depth of expertise and the spirit of collaboration that permeated the discussions. Participating in this event not only provided a platform to share my work but also offered an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional growth. It reaffirmed my commitment to developing AI solutions that prioritize ethics, transparency, and human-centered design principles. -
