How can you learn to tell better stories?
In data analytics, we often rush to try and create a story onto the data. In these cases, we tend to tell a pretty lame story. Not because we aren't telling it well, it is more likely because we don't have an actual story to tell. Before focusing on storytelling, I recommend spending time and effort to make sure you have a worthy story to tell. I call this Storyfinding. Storyfinding is not just another term for data analysis. In Storyfinding, you are seeking to understand. The goal is to connect the What and Why. Does it align with assumptions? Are their surprises or contradictions? Can you make connections or implications based on this understanding? Did your understanding shift? Storyfinding is about discovery and understanding.

How do you use data visualization software to communicate your findings?
Visualization Software like Tableau and Power BI helps users interpret data, revealing trends that are hard to detect in tablular tools like Excel. Most dashboards fall into one of two categories: Explanatory and Exploratory. Explanatory Dashboards are meant for sharing a simplified view of data with a broader audience. They provide enough detail to convey context and performance. Exploratory Dashboards allow users to dive deeper with more filtering on the visuals for finding unique connections or contradictions. Though both types can make raw data understandable, they don't typically inspire audiences to act. For critical insights with major business implications, I recommend using Data Storytelling techniques to convey findings.
