Memorial used about 40 percent of Patient Care Technicians as observers and had a daily average of about 10 observers. For 2016, Memorial’s observer cost was $1.25 million, which was higher than Voorhees and Marlton. The team implemented the Tele-Sitter Program, which allowed staff to observe patients through cameras.
Rather than having a PCT or observer monitor one or two patients at the bedside, staff can monitor more patients at a one to 12 ratio. The Tele-sitter Program went live on time and within budget. Results included a 30 percent reduction in observer cost, averaging 21 employees instead of 35 employees. Their falls rate was 2.16 out of 1,000 patient days, which is less than the baseline of 2.24. And their falls with injury rate was 0.19 out of 1,000 patient days, which was less than the baseline of 0.30
