About

Dr. Schabath is an Senior Member with joint appointments in the Departments of Cancer Epidemiology and Thoracic Oncology. Dr. Schabath has expertise in quantitative imaging/radiomics, molecular epidemiology, cardiovascular/cardiotoxicity epidemiology, and health disparities among LGBTQ/SGM populations.

Dr. Schabath’s lab leads efforts to develop and validate of biomarkers in the lung cancer care continuum including early detection, overtreatment, diagnosis, and treatment response. These biomarkers include quantitative image-based biomarkers (radiomics), germline genetics, circulating biomarkers, and tumor-based biomarkers. Dr. Schabath is one of the first epidemiologists in the world to conduct research on radiomics and to deploy artificial intelligence approaches and has extensive publication and funding track records in these domains. Based on his expertise in radiomics research, Dr. Schabath has been funded by the Early Detection Research Network (EDRN), Quantitative Imaging Network (QIN), Consortium for Molecular and Cellular Characterization of Screen-Detected Lesions (MCL), and the Florida Department of Health (DOH) Biomedical Research Program.

Dr. Schabath’s research portfolio also includes health disparities research related to LGBTQ/sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. As part of on-going and collaborative work, Dr. Schabath has conducted extensive research related to assessing health care provider attitudes, knowledge, and institutional practices of SGM cancer patients which led to the development of an educational curriculum for cultural sensitivity training for oncologists regarding SGM cancer patients called the Curriculum for Oncologists on LGBT populations to Optimize Relevance & Skills (COLORS). Dr. Schabath is also the chair of the SGM working group in the ECOG-ACRIN.
