Taking time to ensure communication is well understood is worth it. A few strategies I find useful are; 1) communicate in the simplest possible terms. 2) Ask questions to validate understanding. 3) Ask questions to confirm that you correctly interpret the communication of others. This is magnified when communicating with coworkers who speak different primary languages. It is also important to recognize that some people avoid asking questions. Promoting an environment of trust and collaboration will foster a culture of understanding and straight talk. You can also ask the other person if your message/concepts were clear. This can open the door to a deeper discussion around specific areas and will help you develop your communication style.

Remember no one is expecting you to know everything. An internship is a learning opportunity and interns are expected to ask questions throughout their internship. Interns should try to think big picture as much as possible. While there are specific task-oriented questions that you may need to have answered think of how your work and team impact the company as a whole. What organizations rely on your work and how does it drive the overall company strategy forward? Questions that show you are thinking about the organization as a whole and not just your slice of work are typically well received.

Taking initiative is important in every position. As an intern, you should work to understand the company culture, organizational structure, and how work gets done. It would help if you also introduced yourself to coworkers across the company, especially in areas you find interesting. I have seen many well-networked interns turn their internship into a career in an area they may not have been thinking about when they started their internship.

Most people love to be complimented. When asking someone I don't know for an opportunity to connect I always lead with why I find their experience or background interesting along with what I hope to gain from meeting. Also, always end your message by thanking them for their time.
