“Michael is a rare gift to a team. He is both brilliant and innovative but also humble and willing to jump in and help with any task. He is wired to connect with people and can effortlessly build relationships that create trust and collaboration. Michael has a mind that is constantly thinking of new and exciting ideas and he then pulls you in to come along on the ride. I throughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn from and work with Michael. He is truly one of a kind!”

How can you help leaders identify and manage risks associated with change?
All change involves some "loss," so I have learned to consider in my communications that I am addressing "fear of loss." And whether I think that the fear is justified or not, doesn't really matter. When I view the audience as dealing with "grieving" over the (perceived) loss, I can turn to empathy, rather than judgment. If that empathy is genuine, my communications will come across considerably better.

Who We Are and What We Do: We help San Quentin inmates read better.
Reading opens up a world of opportunity for a man. Equally important – it opens up opportunities for his family.
Helping a man read better is like tossing a pebble in a pond, except the ripples reading sends out – transform generations.

Reading opens up a world of opportunity for a man. Equally important – it opens up opportunities for his family.
Helping a man read better is like tossing a pebble in a pond, except the ripples reading sends out – transform generations.
Free To Succeed has worked successfully with San Quentin students for over 15 years. We operate Monday through Friday evenings, from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM. Our students are hardworking, dedicated and appreciative. We inspire them. They inspire us.
Free To Succeed volunteers are everyday people – professionals, business people, a painter, a real estate agent, a programmer, a carpenter, a designer, a sales assistant, college students, an operations analyst, an accountant, an event coordinator, an administrative assistant, and yes, teachers.
We’re an all-volunteer, non-profit working to change lives.

Variation Reduction is the process of bringing to physicains actionable information about how their clinical practice varies from each other, so that they can learn from each other and make improvements in care that improve quality and affordability. This is a form of Lean in that it helps clinicians see where the "waste" is in medical care. The process occurs when physicians gather together face to face in a small group and are presented with visual data that allows them to drill into the sources of variation. Through facilitation of this group process in order to make it safe, fun, and driven by curiosity, rather than judgment, the group of physicains will together, in a "bottom up" fashion select a topic of interest and define a new "local standard" for treating a common condition. Using traditional project management and the IHI model for improvment, the group defines an aim statement and metrics to track for processes and outcomes. With regular feedback to all participating individuals, significant improvements have been achieved in quality and affordabilty.
