  • Made with Pride in the Central Valley

    The Business Journal/Chamber Connect

California’s Central Valley, our home, is one of the most productive agricultural regions anywhere. We’re often referred to as the “Breadbasket of the World.” Impressive, right?

But our manufacturing contributions don’t stop there. There are hundreds of products that are made here and then shipped all over the state, country and planet.

Sure ‘Buy Local’ proponents ask us to seek and support local products and companies and that’s important. But it’s more than mere economics. It’s…

Sure ‘Buy Local’ proponents ask us to seek and support local products and companies and that’s important. But it’s more than mere economics. It’s pride, even if those local products don’t stay here.

We have a lot to brag about. But we have a lot to learn, too.

  • This End of the Line is Just the Beginning

    The Business Journal/Chamber Connect

My one year term is coming to an end so this will be my last article as the Fresno Chamber’s Chairman of the Board. Many people have asked if I’m relieved to be at the proverbial “end of the line.”

It’s been a lighting fast year. The opportunity to serve in the Chairman role has been rewarding and also a challenge, balancing professional demands in a year with unprecedented change and growth.

It’s been a lighting fast year. The opportunity to serve in the Chairman role has been rewarding and also a challenge, balancing professional demands in a year with unprecedented change and growth.

If you are like me, you look back at the end of any year in your life and judge your performance. You contemplate all the things you would have done differently. “Would have, should have, could have” comes to mind. You might wish you could’ve done more and you certainly produce a mental inventory of the takeaways and highlights.

But, as I reflect, I can say it’s easy to declare the best of part of this Chairmanship and the best part of this Chamber.

    It’s the people.

  • Break Through Your Personal Glass Ceiling

    The Business Journal/Chamber Connect

The term ‘glass ceiling’ was popularized in a 1986 Wall Street Journal article describing the invisible—but impenetrable—barrier between women and the executive suite which prevented them from reaching the highest levels of the business world regardless of their accomplishments and merits. This is well discussed in a 1995 report of the Federal Glass Ceiling Commission. The metaphor then extended to refer to obstacles hindering the advancement of minorities, as well as women.

Today, 27 years later there are many women and minorities in leadership positions, but studies still reveal barriers and inequities that affect them in business.

  • Time for Change

    The Business Journal/Chamber Connect

“Change is inevitable. Except from a vending machine.” This quote, written by Robert Gallagher, is one of my favorites of all time. Perhaps the reason I like it is that it injects some humor into stressful days during times of intense change.

Sure, I’ve had my share of significant change over the past 10 years, and I know there is more to come. I know most people don’t like change, even if it’s for the better. And then, there is another contingent of people who not only deal well…

Sure, I’ve had my share of significant change over the past 10 years, and I know there is more to come. I know most people don’t like change, even if it’s for the better. And then, there is another contingent of people who not only deal well with change, but welcome and thrive on it.

In business, as in life, change is inevitable – whether you like it or not. So, why not embrace it?

The primary goal of the Kennedy Center's Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child program is to assist communities in developing and implementing a plan for expanded arts education in their schools, ensuring access and equity for all students in grades K-8. Although the initiative provides a structure for work to be accomplished, the Kennedy Center understands that every community is unique, and tailors the consultation and facilitation to each site. The Kennedy Center brings to this initiative more than three decades of work with thousands of students, teachers, principals, school district administrators, business leaders, and arts managers across the country. In September of 2012, Fresno became the tenth national site for the John F. Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child Initiative. The vision of the Kennedy Center’s President Michael Kaiser is that an entire community should be engaged in addressing the need for access and equity to arts education for students across an entire school district. The Any Given Child program is designed to assist a community in planning strategically to provide a high quality arts education for every K-8 student using the existing resources of the school district, city government and the local arts community aided by the Kennedy Center. Because of the high level of community support and Fresno Unified School District's commitment to improving its arts education program, the district was encouraged to apply for this prestigious national program. Why are the arts important to Fresno? Research shows that high quality arts programs offer incredible benefits to students, schools and communities: better attendance, higher grades, improved test scores, higher engagement, brighter job prospects and more self-confidence to name just a few. http://www.anygivenchildfresno.org/

In doing so, it provides a mechanism for mobilizing business and community support of local public schools, and it acts as a clearinghouse for the sharing of information among school district, business, and community leaders. Mission and Vision The mission of the Fresno Compact is to focus community-wide efforts on preparing students for the increasing demands of society and the workplace. The vision is graduating every student ready for a dynamic economic environment. History The Compact was formed in 1990 by businesses and the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, whose members were concerned about the difficulty of finding young workers equipped to succeed even in entry level jobs; and about the problems such young people have in supporting a family, finding satisfying work and contributing positively to the economy. Schools and community leaders joined with business in organizing the Compact. In 2011, the Fresno Compact incorporated and was designated as a 501c3 organization.
