What are the steps to creating a cybersecurity risk management program for a government agency?
This is one of the most fundamental, yet overlooked aspects of a security program. Understanding the actual environment is essential. The environment consists of more than assets. For example: -Hardware assets -Software assets -Information (proprietary information, contract information, customer information, etc.) Beyond that applying actual values. How much is the hardware worth? How much is software worth? If you lose access, how much is wasted in resources? What does the entity stand to lose if proprietary information is lost? How much market share is at risk if customers lose confidence? One must know this information before they can actually apply any true risk formulas and vocalize challenges to leadership.

There are various methods to assess risk and a quick search can provide you with great options. It’s important to note that risk can only truly be analyzed or managed if an organization understands their environment, truthfully records vulnerabilities, understands their threat landscape and factors in external stakeholders such as operations, finance, Human Resources, etc.

How can IT risk management software be customized to meet your organization's needs?
A security framework can be chosen based on multiple factors such as industry requirements, contractual requirements or the importance of what needs protection. Implementing the correct level of security is very important. An organization should ensure adequate protection, but not implement safeguards that are unnecessary or costly just for the sake of having them is important also. Security should drive and enhance operations, not undermine them.

How does social engineering affect network security?
Technical safeguards give a sense of security for organizations. Network security is imperative for any entity in the digital age. It is just as important to ensure that personnel are trained on proper implementation of technical standards, but also that they are security minded in general. A compromised individual with trusted access can vastly impact network security. Practices like continuous monitoring, 2 person integrity and zero trust can help counter, but well trained personnel should be the first line of defense.
