Spoke at U of I Urbana Champaign on the Business Value of Big Data. Gave an overview of how to derive business value from data and compared the various approaches on getting value out of data. Then moderated a panel discussion between 3 big data leaders in the industry from Yahoo, AB InBev, and Caterpillar.

Presented a point of view on SQL in Hadoop tools and deriving business value from healthcare data using Tableau as a self-service data discovery engine connecting to Actian.

Companies seeking competitive advantage over their rivals often invest valuable resources in developing an effective and actionable customer insight. An actionable customer Insight provides information and a plan of action for business users to strategically increase the customer value through better product offerings, services, marketing activities, and contact points.

The main business objective to achieve actionable customer insight is to increase the customer lifetime value (CLV) of all customers. There are many ways to develop this actionable customer insight. One way is to categorize customers in behaviorally similar groups and then to understand the characteristics of those groups. Once these characteristics are understood, a deeper understanding of why this behavior is exhibited would help predict future behavior and also allow certain contact points to influence favorable future outcomes.
