I had the opportunity to volunteer as a buddy at the Night to Shine on Friday, February 7, 2020. This was a neat experience to interact with many loving people and be a friend to my buddy! The event was held in Bountiful, Utah and we did many activities such as dancing, karaoke, and coloring. I loved celebrating such wonderful individuals. In order to be a mentor, I was required to attend preparation meetings weeks prior to the evening.

Facilitate meaningful discussions during various seminar sessions each week by encouraging students to participate in seminar conversation. Express to students the significance of the BYU-Idaho Learning Model through the studying of provided resources as well as the sharing of personal experiences. In preparation for seminars attend weekly leadership trainings. Learn many new things from seminar attendee students as they apply the concepts of "Prepare"/"Teach One Another"/"Ponder and Prove".

BYU-Idaho Student Support's First-year Mentor Program emphasizes the significance of helping students in their first semesters attending college to adjust smoothly and feel comfortable in this transition period of life. As a mentor, I was able to meet these students, interact on a personal level and help them feel welcome through small acts such as tours of campus, weekly mentor training, and my personal favorite: delivering cookies to my mentees in the pouring rain.

I worked alongside a group of driven volunteers to conduct informational surveys, perform grassroots outreach, prepare presentations, and facilitate meaningful discussions with high school students during their health classes. As a team, our goal was to learn more about, "How teens handle difficult situations" in hopes of identifying key causes in hopes of helping them realize what resources are available to them and hopefully save lives.
