The Biosmart Initiative won the prestigious 2015 Unilever 'Made by You' competition, a national award which recognizes social enterprises who effectively and sustainably recycle locally available materials.

Couple this demand with limited access to education, technology and expertise within a framework of high bureaucracy, poverty and unemployment. Population and GDP throughout Africa are currently rising at substantial rates. As both increase, the demand for food as well as the demand for higher qualities and more variety, rises. At the same time, much of the fertile land in Africa is un-utilized or underutilized…

Couple this demand with limited access to education, technology and expertise within a framework of high bureaucracy, poverty and unemployment. Population and GDP throughout Africa are currently rising at substantial rates. As both increase, the demand for food as well as the demand for higher qualities and more variety, rises. At the same time, much of the fertile land in Africa is un-utilized or underutilized because of subsistence farming with little to no agricultural inputs. Additionally, what production is available for resale is inefficiently processed, moved and marketed.

The team directed 150 Ethiopian nationals over a 12 month period to bring 21st century processes and technologies to the company. I was responsible for the human resource component, ranging from recruitment and hiring practices to benefits and training. Specific effort was required to integrate cultural beliefs with Western business practices which resulted in a successful re-engineering within two years.
