Here's how you can establish connections with influential leaders in your industry.
Well, I think I might start with banishing the word “target”. That imagery defies true relationship-building. And, the only way relationships work is if we give a damn about the human we want to get to know. Yes it’s okay to want to know people - but if you’re just after a “target”, we’re right back into what brought the word networking such a bad name. I remember it well! In my corporate days, except for the real relationship-builders in my inner circle - when I was an employed CFO, I was on the target list of many. Whenever I was in between jobs, I could have been a fly on the wall for all those same people cared. Nah - I’m out of we’re just after “targets”.

Your team is divided on software tools. How can you navigate conflicting opinions to reach a consensus?
These days our staffs cover generations from Gen Z to Baby Boomers. These 4 generations use tech very differently. In our own team we have two Z’s, two X’s, and a Boomer. The cool thing is that in the right environment, the Boomers learn about so much more functionality than they would otherwise know. AND the Z’s learn the real life systems that the current tech is replacing so they understand them more deeply. Honing in on the “right” tech may just mean “Listen to each other and keep an open mind”. Let the process you are automating determine the best tool. Be patient with the Boomers while they learn knew things. And be respectful of the Z’s who know A LOT about simplifying things!

How can you develop your financial acumen?
Just like anything, gaining financial insight and acumen can be a chore or a joy. In your business if it seems like a chore, I invite you to think about it a little bit differently. Your business is a story - your story. Its struggles, its highs, its beginning, its evolution, its clients, its employees. In other words it is a legacy. If you think of your numbers as the script that tells the story for you, it can change the game for you. How do you get here: Just tie each number you see to one of your business levers. Your hiring lever, your marketing lever, your pricing lever - and all of a sudden, the value of gaining financial insights makes a difference that matters. It puts the FUN in FINANCE.

How can you execute strategy in an uncertain environment?
Success or failure with a strategy comes with its execution. And the most important thing to understand about that is that there are always going to be resources consumed in order to execute. So don't consider a strategy "signed, sealed, and delivered" until you've been sure to include a forecast of the financial requirements and returns that you are counting on. You need a ruler to measure progress, and in most situations, that is a forecast against which you compare actual results. Don't leave out this critical step!
