You're a new executive manager. How do you build a network that will help you succeed?
A great way to reach out and build rapport is by organizing an event. Whether you volunteer to be on an organizing committee, or you start your own event, you will reach out for speakers, moderators, attendees, and perhaps even sponsors. At Hypatia Capital, we started with the Private Equity CEO Roadmap Seminar, which we held 17 times at the Harvard Club of New York before the pandemic. We invited private equity CEOs, private equity investors, deal makers and CEO-level executives for a morning of information and networking. Reaching out to the individuals we wanted to meet with an invitation they would value, was a great way to connect!

You're a new executive manager. How do you build a network that will help you succeed?
When I became a Managing Director at an investment bank in the 2000's, I realized my network (clients, colleagues, investors) was 90% male. I wanted balance in my professional life, so I set out to change this. I reached out to the most senior corporate and financial services female executives to start building my own ecosystem. Fast forward a decade, and the idea for the WCEO ETF was born. Launched in 2023, the WCEO ETF invests in all American public companies with a woman CEO for performance, diversification and impact. Our investment thesis is that women CEOs outperform. Why? It is just harder for them to get there. One of the reasons is their networks. More women in leadership will change that! Join us!

How can you maximize the benefits of a performance evaluation?
In order to give a great performance evaluation, one thing you can do is ask the employee to give you a list of their greatest accomplishments, biggest projects, and things they would like to work on for the following period. Understanding where they are coming from is a great first step in helping them get to where they want to go. And that will certainly help the team!

How can you balance patience and returns as a venture capitalist?
A measurable investment thesis will help build your credibility. For example, the WCEO ETF investment thesis is that women CEOs will outperform. Why? Because it is harder for them to get there, so the ones that do are by definition extraordinary. By isolating the Female Factor, investors have the opportunity to capture this alpha, versus its US small cap blend category.
