How can you make the most of your first year as a Network Engineer?
Don't just seek to learn from others at your job but outside of it as well! I have gained insight on issues that I have faced from LinkedIn, Facebook groups, former colleagues, and current ones. Not to mention community pages, forums, and vendor support. In this field you will run across different types of people. Some are willing to knowledge share and some are not. Regardless, it's up to you to figure out how to accomplish the task at hand. So be versatile, never stop studying and learning!

What are the best ways to communicate with network security professionals?
No two people have the same communication style. When it comes to engineering in general, don't take the way engineers communicate during a project status meeting or troubleshooting bridge personal. Some engineers can come off as rough around the edges but at the end of the day, they just want the network to work as it should and we all play our part to make sure that happens. I gave my honest opinion once in an interview. I said, working with engineers on a bridge call is like having a bag of trail mix. There are different types of nuts in the bag and you never know which one you will get. Believe it or not, the hiring manager actually agreed with me and I got the job!

What are the best methods for network diagnosis?
Always use debug commands with caution. Debug commands on a live network can cause latency issues among other problems on the network. Enabling debugging can disrupt operation of the router when inter-networks are experiencing high load conditions. Also if logging is enabled, the access server can intermittently freeze as soon as the console port gets overloaded with log messages. Make sure you understand the impact of the debugs on the stability of the platform before using them. In my opinion there is too much risk involved. I would just steer clear of using debugs on a corporate network.

What are the best ways to teach operating system concepts and skills?
There is no one answer to this question as it depends on the operating system being taught and the level of expertise of the person being taught. However, some tips on teaching operation systems would be to start with the basics of the system and then gradually introduce more complex concepts. It is also important to make sure that the person being taught has a good foundation of how the system works before moving on to more advanced topics.
