    One of the most iconic areas where gamification has traditionally seen a widespread implementation is applications and engagement strategies that aim to encourage physical activity. While the ideal gamification pedagogy should be to motivate the player to follow a consistent fitness regimen, even the most successful apps either digress towards being social networks and mere workout trackers, or they fail to include all the aspects of a healthy life such as a healthy diet, active lifestyle and…

    One of the most iconic areas where gamification has traditionally seen a widespread implementation is applications and engagement strategies that aim to encourage physical activity. While the ideal gamification pedagogy should be to motivate the player to follow a consistent fitness regimen, even the most successful apps either digress towards being social networks and mere workout trackers, or they fail to include all the aspects of a healthy life such as a healthy diet, active lifestyle and so on. A good number of these apps primarily focus on generating user-traffic and hence fall short of aligning business objectives with player objectives. Despite there being 40,000 fitness-related apps over various platforms, 80% of them are expected to fail in meeting their business objectives due to similar design issues (Source: Forbes). We surveyed around 200 active smartphone users representing more than 10 nationalities to gauge their fitness habits as well as their expectations from an ideal fitness app. Our findings reaffirmed our understanding of the gamification gaps in some of the most popular fitness apps. The main focus of this session is how to target players with incentives that are meaningful and accordingly we propose an interesting strategy.
