What do you do if your work-life balance is affecting your job satisfaction in nursing?
Life is rarely 50/50. Work/life balance is, in many ways, similar to relationships. In a healthy relationship one partner may at times give 70% while the other only gives 30%. At another time, in that same relationship, it may be reversed. Weighing our efforts in our work life and home life can often mirror this give-and-take. Having realistic expectations that sometimes one or the other will take precedence is key to maintaining boundaries and keeping vigilance to avoid over extending yourself. When work requires more time and energy establish timeframes and end goals so that it does not take over other areas of life . Likewise, when family requires more also take time to prioritize.

What strategies can you use to navigate the healthcare system?
Look into supportive services and resources that can wraparound you during a difficult diagnosis. Oftentimes there are additional non-traditional treatments and support that work alongside standard care. A good example is during cancer treatment you could benefit from acupuncture or nutrition support to help combat side effects during chemotherapy.

What strategies can you use to navigate the healthcare system?
Recognize that often times you are building your library of resources in the beginning of a diagnosis. You may not need every avenue of support at that time but knowing where, and to whom, you can reach out to at different stages can give you confidence you will be able to navigate your health no matter what changes or challenges may occur.

What strategies can you use to navigate the healthcare system?
When patients have multiple providers it is easy to lose track of which concerns and questions to bring to which doctor. It is a good idea to consider before your appointment whether this is the correct provider for the correct questions and concerns. Wasting time discussing an issue that specialist is unable to advise you on can lead to frustration for everyone.
