⚡️Roman Villard, CPA

Today is my 205th day in a full-time “Business Development” role. The transition from public accounting has been one that I wouldn’t trade for anything, despite landing in a role that I knew virtually nothing about. I took a circuitous route to land in this position (I’ll spare you the details), but thankful to have previously worked with RC Diaz that helped get me connected with Embark Denver.

Prior to joining Embark, I had dozens of questions about the role and more generally speaking, how to “develop business”. Naivete led the way into this unknown world to me. In the last 205 days, I have learned a lot about business and met some great people along the way.

3 things that have stood out to me in my first 205 days:

Business development is RELATIONSHIPS . Period. The best way to create a lasting impact is to HELP others. There is no magic key. You just have to GRIND . I know. Building relationships, helping others, and working hard are timeless truths that dozens and dozens of business books have been written about - WE HEAR IT ALL THE TIME and spoiler alert, they are true. Focus on them.

A few thoughts.

As a green staff in public accounting, Tom Montgomery was the evangelist of building relationships in my career. It was hard to envision how as a staff that I could have an impact on others in that young role. They key there was to dig a little beyond the auditor/client relationship (without breaking independence standards, of course) and get to know the PERSON you are working with or for. You’re never too young to start.

Helping others without expecting anything in return is a novel idea, isn’t it? Business development isn’t selling. It is connecting folks to the help they need. Do you have someone in your network or life that just simply needs help? Take the time to LISTEN to the problem, whether it’s related to your service or not, and offer help. It’s amazing what a little listening and selflessness can accomplish.

I thought there was a template for BD. Nope, not even close. There are many different ways to build relationships and help others and they are different for everyone. The common theme is that DISCIPLINE and PERSISTENCE in your chosen efforts will pay dividends.

I’m thankful to be learning something new every day in this role and am excited to continue to help others and build relationships with Embark in Denver. I would love to hear any success stories or thoughts on your experience in the world of BD.
