“I hired Richard Robinson as an evening HelpDesk person and the quality of his work product and high caliber work ethic made it clear that he'd be more beneficial to the Firm during the busier daytime hours. Richard was an asset almost immediately. He connected with his peers, management and with our customers. He was technically very sound and brought a level of skill and enthusiasm that made an impact instantly. Richard is so easy to work with, extremely intelligent, a very good listener, followed our processes, always delivered a high quality work product on time. He was able to impress all levels of the organization with his quiet competence and ability to get the job done while being on multiple IT project teams. I would hire Richard again if ever given the opportunity. He's a unique contributor, able to play multiple roles and always exceeding expectations.”

How can you engage team members who are disinterested in their work?
Active listening, combined with a dash of vulnerability, can be a powerful combo. When you truly engage in active listening, you create a safe, judgment-free space for your team member to open up. Ask probing questions to delve deeper into their thoughts and feelings and be willing to be authentic and vulnerable during the conversation. This not only humanizes you as a manager but also makes your team member more comfortable in sharing. Through this process, you'll unearth the root causes of their disengagement, whether it's related to their workload, personal struggles, team dynamics, or career aspirations. Together, you can co-create solutions that reignite their passion and commitment to their work.

Don't underestimate the value of community involvement in boosting employee engagement. Companies are increasingly embracing corporate social responsibility. Engaging with the community enhances employee happiness and identification with their workplace. Happy employees, who find purpose in serving others, provide superior service and become more committed to their company's mission. Community involvement also shapes a company's identity, showcasing its care for people beyond profits. This fosters trust and loyalty among employees. In a climate where monetary rewards are harder to come by, community involvement is a great way to foster team member engagement.

How can you engage team members who are disinterested in their work?
In a previous lifetime (when we all worked in the office), I kept a pad of sticky notes. After hours, I would walk around the department and leave notes stuck to people's monitors. "Thank you for your work on the XYZ project. You were such a great partner!" "I really appreciate how hard you are working to herd cats on this difficult project. Just want you to know that I recognize the effort you are making." We don't get to see each other as often these days. Emails don't have that same impact, but that shouldn't keep you from giving recognition. Don't wait until one on ones. Send a short note just telling your team (or maybe even more impactful, people who aren't direct reports) that you appreciate their work.
