Application of Magnetorheological fluid in an Automotive Shock Absorber
-
This paper compiles the fundamental science behind Magnetorheological dampers and their application in the Automotive Industry. The first few chapters cover the history and basic operating principles of MR dampers; it delves further into smart fluids and their states, MR damper augmentations and control methods, mathematical modelling of the control strategies, pulse width modulation and finally a comparative simulation of semi-active and passive suspension systems in MATLAB/Simulink.

The paper explores a wide range of disciplines and the complexity involved when designing an MR damper. The comparative simulation proves the potential of smart fluid devices in an automotive situation, and has led to a further interest in designing a real-life MR damper in the future. -
Engine Design Simulation Analysis

In this paper the engine of a 1999 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa will be modelled in GT-Suite. The engine will be implemented into a vehicle model and modified with the aim to achieve superior performance. The vehicle model will be based on an Austin Mini Super-Deluxe (Mark 1). This composition of vehicle and engine is common in the modified Mini scene; there are various suppliers of Hayabusa conversion kits i.e. ‘Z Cars Hayabusa Bike Engine Mini Road Kit’.

The Hybridisation and engine optimisation of the Hayabusa Mini increased the power: weight ratio to 405.16kW/tonne from 198.27kW/tonne, this equates to a 104.34760679% increase from the standard unmodified vehicle.
Furthermore, additional power gains are available by derestricting the electric motors from their 125kW and 75kW applied limitations through the hybrid control system. The power output of the electric motors is limited to maintain credibility and realism of the build. The electric motors modelled in the hybridisation process are capable of achieving a combined total power output of 280kW, and meanwhile only 200kW is used.
The suspension modifications made produced a set of realistic and theoretical ideal damping conditions for the Austin Mini at the Oulton Park circuit. By doing so, the results generated have an increased level of realism as the suspension system was tailored specifically for the application.
Finally, the aerodynamic modifications made to the vehicle saw a 1295% increase in the applied downforce to the vehicle. The additional downforce assists with the road hold of the vehicle alongside the suspension modifications. As a whole, the modifications made to the vehicle saw a substantial increase in power: weight ratio and road holding.

Vehicle Dynamics in MSC Adams
-
In this paper a Reverted Gear mechanism was modelled successfully in MSC Adams and numerically validated. The main focus of this paper was to study the change in angular velocity with respect to the independent gear ratios of each meshing gear set. The Multibody Dynamic study is rather simple; however, it does prove how precise the results are. The study also shows how the gear sets interact with one another in order to produce a change in velocity through a series of gears and shafts.

Data Logging and Analysis Suspension Dynamics

This paper focused on interpreting information obtained from a test day at Donnington Park using Blackpool and the Fylde colleges Formula Renault. The tasks revolve around real data from the cars on board data logger and task 2 of this assignment will be analysing the data retrieved. The data acquisition at Donnington circuit had errors, although they were rectified through analysis of the data. The time at Donnington was limited due to the high number of students, and the logistics, although the task was primarily to set up a data logging system to allow for data acquisition, which it was successful in. It would have been helpful to have more time to change vehicle settings to understand how the data changes and implement them on the FR2000.
When analysing RPM traces, it is made simpler through overlaying data e.g., Brake pressure, TPS and RPM. When the traces are overlaid, it makes it easier to interpret how the vehicle and driver are performing. An example of overlaid traces can be shown in Figure 18. The RPM and TPS analysis are based on other information acquired e.g. Brake pressure, wheel speed, to remove the guesswork in the analysis, although this is not displayed on the graph’s due to overcrowding.
