What are some embedded C libraries and frameworks that you use or recommend?
I think what constitutes “embedded C” vs “C” is a grey line as others have mentioned. As for what libraries can be considered helpful for a particular embedded project is just as blurry. What I recommend for junior engineers and people getting started in the field is utilize what’s available to you, whether that be Xilinx or MPlab drivers or arduino functions, and read the code behind the driver. This will help you understand what is fundamentally going on behind the scenes, and give you a better understanding of the system as a whole. More than a few optimizations for existing libraries have been found by poking through the source code and discovering areas of improvement.

Here's how you can enhance your skills in embedded systems design as an electronic engineer.
The best way to master designing embedded systems is to start with a solid foundation. Learning to do constrained programming, optimizing for execution time or memory use is a great start to familiarize you with tailoring your code to a target environment. Once you’ve got the basics down, learning how to read data sheets and interface with peripherals is a good next step. Here, an arduino and some sparkfun devices can be a good start, but ultimately you’ll want to move more towards FPGA based approaches that don’t hold your hand as a developer as much. Another bit of practice would be to create simple drivers yourself, getting to know how control logic is used to interface with devices over SPI, I2C, etc. helps cement your understanding.

How does Python compare to C for embedded system programming?
C will always be a reliable choice for programming on microprocessors or similar embedded systems where resources are scarce. While some may complain about manual memory management, this can actually be leveraged for compact structs or efficient memory manipulation tricks which save execution time and memory. Python still has its place however, it can be used to quickly visualize data sets, manipulate or analyze packets, etc. I personally would much rather track and analyze 10,000 UDP packets in Python than C, but would never think a small embedded device calibration routine should be done in Python.
