Here's how you can grasp a client's needs and deliver customized solutions in an IT Sales interview.

Active listening is definitely key, but asking good, insightful questions is equally important. Put yourself in the clients shoes. Don’t focus on your solution. Really dig into the challenge or problem and understand it from their perspective. This has always helped me uncover important metrics that can be agreed upon by you and them as key performance indicators if they decide to move forward with you. Open ended questions like, “that’s super interesting, I’d like to understand that better. Can you describe a time when this process has worked really well?” Getting a deep bidirectional conversation is what I strive for, and it’s not based my solution, but rather their challenge.

What do you do if your colleagues in Enterprise Software are constantly at odds?

A lot of people have called me a “diplomat” for my ability to find common grounds among warring factions, whether that’s in the family or at work. Helping colleagues who constantly seem at odds can be helpful if you bring a “Switzerland” perspective and can help foster a dialogue!

What do you do if your work-life balance needs are not understood by your employer?

Setting boundaries are a key tactic to staying sane in an “always on” world. Being polite and professional, but clearly and unemotionally stating your abilities and willingness to work beyond reasonable expectations are well within your right.

What do you do if your Enterprise Software vendor and customer are in conflict?

Like in any relationship, communication is the most important key to healthy interactions. Understanding the other side’s perspective and having a candid and open line of communication will pave the way to deeper understanding. Listen, listen, and listen some more. Then, think before you talk! My $0.02.

What do you do if your boss's expectations are unclear in the enterprise software industry?

I was in this situation once, and I simply turned the tables on them, and asked them if I had made this kind of request to them, how they would feel/react/respond? The simple act of forcing them to think from my perspective caused a shift that allowed for further clarification and a more collaborative approach to providing what they were looking for.
