    Starting point: As the result of irreducible complexity, emerging behavior in certain classes of complex systems, structural/systemic opacity, etc., accurate, specific predictions related to human and natural systems are simply not possible (with very few exceptions). History is shaped by significant discontinuous events (aka *wildcards* or "black swans") that are only predictable in hindsight. The point isn't to know those in advance, but to be robust [ideally, "antifragile" (Nassim Taleb)] to multiple futures.

    Coursework: technological forecasting, system dynamics, global change, scenario development.
