  • From Concept to Application - Data Drilling, a Tool to Supplement Incidents Prevention Strategy from a Perspective of Well Services Company

The original concept of “data drilling” is derived from computer science and widely used to extract information from a data set and transform it into an understandable structure for further use. In the present bussiness world, it evloves to include analysis of granular data to provide in-depth understanding of a bussiness issue. In the area of HSE, the bussiness issues may refer to prevention of a certain injury/ undesired event which may entail thorough examination of today’s paradigm of injury/ incident prevention and supplementing/ re-constructing it with meaningful feedback. Critical to achieving it is by leveraging the wealth of data that an organization amasses and drilling down to explore opportunities presented by granular data – a process known as data drilling. Sharing and replication of the approach and application methodically is paramount for the organization to attain breakthrough results – preventing injuries in workplace. Hand injuries and dropped objects incidents data from the past four years was studied to understand the underlying causes of these incidents which form the basis for prevention strategy formulation. The value of data drilling is more apparent in the case study on dropped objects incidents primarily because of the better defined methodology to understand potential outcome versus actual. The contrasting dispersion of incidents by actual and potential outcome is distinct and provides a great case for change. The data drilling exercise shows that the risk of dropped object is not fully appreciated and the use of the data drilling tool has helped to highlight potential outcome of dropped object incidents that were not previously looked at in detail due to the low impact actual outcome.

  • SPE SPE-174745 Managing Hand Injury Risk Perspective of International Well Servicing Company

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 28-30 September, Houston, Texas, USA

Hand injury risk is a concern in many organizations across the upstream oil and gas industry. Hand injury risk is a concern in many organizations across the upstream oil and gas industry. Despite strong focus on hand safety, hand injuries continue to occur in high numbers due to the very hands-on nature of the industry both on the rig floor as well as throughout the many processes supporting exploration and production activities. A total approach to manage hand injury risk is required to look at hand injury risk from a lifecycle approach with the aim of making hands-on job hands-free. In this paper, the authors explore a fit-for-purpose program that addresses the challenges of reducing hand injuries by communicating and implementing a simplified and easy-to-understand set of rules to govern risks to hand injuries in a total approach. This holistic approach focuses on the hearts and mind effort to change mindsets that hands on practices can be done safer through alternative work methods and also developing and implementing new ways of performing high risk hands on jobs. Ideas to improve hand hazards recognition through innovative risk assessment methodologies like video risk assessments and hand hazard picture books will further help to reinforce the hearts and mind effort. Eliminating hand injuries is possible and putting the right focus and strategy will go a long way in making the industry safer for the hands that work in it.

The increasing prospect for hydrocarbon in the interior parts of China presents opportunities as well risks to organizations operating in these remote corners of the Middle Kingdom which presents harsh driving conditions coupled with poor driving etiquette. In the more developed provinces, driving also has its challenges with the exponential proliferation of automobile population in the world’s most populous country; ensuring safety of personnel on the road remains an ongoing challenge both in urban and remote corners of China. Keeping driving safety messaging simple and relevant is key to getting to the heart and minds of population of drivers in China, many whom are contractor employees. The use of the Super 6 Safe Driving Rules which were formulated based on 80% of common motor vehicle accident causes. The Super 6 Safe Driving Rules is more than a vehicle safety campaign. Proactive performance measures based on the Super 6 Rules are also implemented and the results are used as a leading indicator for transportation risk management. In essence, this is balanced approach for fleet management and in particular provides an effective mechanism to pinpoint, monitor and review driving data. The Super 6 Safe Driving Rules has helped to shift the driving behavior of drivers managed under this program in China and early lagging performance data have been encouraging.
