  • DroidFIC- A File Integrity Checker for the Android OS

    -

DroidFIC proposes an addition to the Android OS that introduces an integrity checking service to monitor the state of the filesystem and critical kernel structures. The project attempts to address the lack of file integrity monitoring software as an avenue to mitigate backdoor malware on the Android OS, but borrows its design from existing work designed for Linux-based platforms, e.g. Samhain and Tripwire.

The project attempts to address the lack of file integrity monitoring software as an avenue to mitigate backdoor malware on the Android OS, but borrows its design from existing work designed for Linux-based platforms, e.g. Samhain and Tripwire.
The File Integrity Checker is designed as three components- a kernel module that provides kernel integrity checking, a hashing service that provides native filesystem access and a user interface that validates results and alters users to failed checks.
The prototype implementation demonstrates a means to efficiently check the integrity of selected system files and in-memory kernel structures against a known-good baseline with minimal reliance on user intervention.

I worked on this project on a large team of masters students, PhD students and post doctoral researchers. My responsibilities included addressing issues that make iris recognition at long distances difficult, for example, segmentation, illumination and eye-blink detection.

  • MAC Support for Low Overhead Messages

    -

This project aimed at providing efficient support at the Medium Access Control (MAC) Layer of the OSI model variant to specific types of wireless communication, namely continuous, to-and-fro communication (quick conversations) of variable packet lengths between multiple nodes, and group responses.
The question of overhead reduction was handled by utilizing a modified header at the MAC level which identified packet sources and destinations via a 'flow number' as opposed to the conventional…

The question of overhead reduction was handled by utilizing a modified header at the MAC level which identified packet sources and destinations via a 'flow number' as opposed to the conventional means of addressing through 4 6-bit addresses. Each flow number maps uniquely to unique source/destination pairs. Utilizing the modified header provided bit-savings proportional to the size of the packet.
Group response was handled by assigning each node with its unique OFDM subcarrier frequency such that small messages can be transmitted simultaneously from multiple sources without the need for medium access control

  • Jammer Localization and Defence

    -

The project aimed at exploring jamming attacks outside of those perpetrated by a single, conventional full-spectrum, isotropic and stationery jammer. Some of the avenues explored covered moving jammers, jammers of variable signal strength and multiple jammers.
Jammer localization was carried out through a variant of the Minimum Covering Circle Localization, designed to function even for a distributed infrastructure, at the expense of added complexity. The concept involves using location…

Jammer localization was carried out through a variant of the Minimum Covering Circle Localization, designed to function even for a distributed infrastructure, at the expense of added complexity. The concept involves using location estimates gathered from all plausible nodes and using this information in complete context so as to obtain a final location estimate.
Another avenue explored was to develop an anti-jamming technique by utilizing phased arrays (by building phased arrays out of some of the nodes surrounding the jammed nodes), but this method was later deemed unfeasible due to LOS interference and sacrificing multiple nodes to generate a phased array has a high cost-return ration.

  • Gravel Kernel

    -

The Gravel kernel is an implementation of the basic subsystems of a real-time operating system, such as task scheduling, resource allocation and memory protection.
The basic design involves developing READ, WRITE and SLEEP syscalls as well as multiple handlers to handle software interrupts and interrupt requests.
Also implemented are context switching and task management, as well as mutexes for concurrency control.

Also implemented are context switching and task management, as well as mutexes for concurrency control.
Furthermore, the project also involved developing predicates for the UB test to determine whether a given set of tasks was schedulable, protection through the priority ceiling emulation protocols and features to prevent unbounded priority inversion through highest locker priority protocols
