You're managing a team of people with different personalities. How can you keep everyone motivated?
Outcomes-based planning is a great tool for aligning a team on long-term goals and the steps needed to achieve them in the mid- and short-term. The focus in outcomes-based planning starts with the WHY instead of the HOW. This ensures that goals and activities are laddering up to the outcome that the team is aiming to achieve, and it can be very effective for prioritizing the must-dos vs. nice-to-haves.

You're managing a team of people with different personalities. How can you keep everyone motivated?
Spending time getting to know your team - and for the team to get to know each other - is critical. One activity I found useful during team offsite a few years ago was a team talent show, where every team member revealed their hidden talents. The insights from this activity kept being brought up even many months later. Another activity we did was the Leadership Circle, where each member of the team shared their creative and reactive tendencies, and we talked about implications for our collaboration and working style. I find it is much easier to start with more fun and light exercises like the hidden talents to create a safe space, and then it is more feasible to move to a more vulnerable space to share strengths and weaknesses.

What do you do if your team is facing uncertainty and you need to lead them effectively?
Open and transparent communication is critical for a team leader in times of uncertainty. Hand in hand with this is active listening. and empathy - it is vital to create a safe space where the team can share their questions and concerns without fear of judgment. This helps build trust among the team and can help the team navigate uncertainty together.
