“Since early 2016, I have supported Steve and his team as a member of the Board of Trustees of Mystic Aquarium. Steve is mission focused and purpose driven, fostering a high performing culture of teamwork and accountability. Through his long and storied tenure leading Mystic Aquarium, Steve has navigated a myriad financial and operational challenges, reinvented the face and mission of the organization, and has built a business that is poised for substantial growth. He is an expert at developing business and sustaining relationships in the private and institutional sectors, and at all levels of federal, state, and local government. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his compassion for his team and the community and perseverance to protect the organization and the public while remaining operational was unparalleled. I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with Steve at the Sea Research Foundation/Mystic Aquarium and look forward to the opportunity to work with him again.”

How can you ensure accountability in your team?
One way to build team confidence and individual accountability is to break down goals to quarterly benchmarks that track progress in meeting them. For example, a $1 million sales goal might be broken down to $100k in quarter 1, $250k in quarter 2 and the balance in quarter 3 and 4, so that the goal itself is aligned with the seasonality of the sales cycle. Sharing progress against these milestone benchmarks with team members is a critical way of both building accountability and engaging team members in supporting each other in goal achievement for the organization.

How can you ensure accountability in your team?
SMART goals build confidence in organizational leadership. Unlike stretch goals, which can serve a purpose relative to compensation, SMART goals can and should be closely aligned with budgets and financial forecasts. Underperforming and financially challenged organizations almost always set unrealistic or false goals, benchmarks, and financial budgets and projections to “look good” only to fail in execution and results. This approach is counter productive, setting individuals, teams, and organizations up to fail.
