How can mentoring help you manage your time more effectively as a leader?
We are inundated with books, podcasts, etc. trying to help us find “meaning” in our professional lives. For some of us, it can be difficult to find larger purpose in our daily work lives. As a lawyer I want to win. I want my clients to be happy with their choice in counsel. But winning is never guaranteed and, often, never as clear as a simple “W”. By shifting your focus from “winning” to helping your team move forward in their careers, and trying to reach their full potential you get the best of all worlds. Helping others is incredibly fulfilling. The joy you feel watching someone you helped reach career milestones comes back to you tenfold. The added benefit, a better team gets you (and the client) the “win” you were looking for.

How can you negotiate fairly with your partners?
Transparency in your goals leads to trust. Assuming this is a partnership that you value and are committed to long term, it is crucial to lay out your big picture goals. A lasting partnership requires everyone pulling in the same direction, this can only happen if all the stakeholders understand the vision of the future of the business from everyone’s perspective. This means sharing compensation goals, your desires for where the business is going and at least a loose plan for getting there. With all of the partners understanding their various motivations you can minimize disappointment when no one gets exactly what she wanted which is guaranteed. Trust is everything in any partnership.
