I an Advisor to Argonne’s Chain Reaction Innovations program (CRI), a two-year fellowship program for innovators focused on clean energy and science technologies. Through an annual call, four to six innovators are selected and given a two-year runway to develop and scale their technologies while being supported through fellowship funding that covers salary, benefits, and use of laboratory equipment and office space. Through a partnership with mentor organizations, CRI participants also receive assistance developing business strategies, conducting market research, and finding long-term financing and potential commercial partners. As a result of this fellowship, program participants are supported in their efforts to launch energy or manufacturing businesses in the future.

CRI is developing an internship program named SEED, the acronym for Student Entrepreneurs for Energy Development. SEED will pair interns with the CRI innovators. They will receive hands on experience working with the innovators on the research and development of their technologies and gain entrepreneurship skills.

The CRI team recognizes the importance of ensuring SEED includes students from underrepresented groups. They want to develop an internship program that is accessible. So, with my knowledge and experience, I was invited to join several STEM educators, community leaders, and professionals in a focus group with Argonne’s CRI team and Education team to discuss SEED in greater detail, identify challenges or barriers that may prevent students from participating, and develop solutions.
