How can you manage cross-functional conflicts without compromising your values?
My personal favorite comes from my "night job" as an improv comedian. In my improv troupe, one of our central tenets is to "make your scene partner look great." When my emphasis is on making my scene partners (i.e., fellow colleagues) look great, AND their focus is on doing the same for me? It's a lot less work and there's a sense of ease when trying to do hard things as a group. So many organizations suffer from unproductive internal competition. It's like we forget we're on the same team, striving for the same goals. Improv might seem frivolous to many. It actually carries deep wisdom that applies to all sorts of group dynamics. How can you make your scene partners look great today?

Served a two year term as a citywide representative to my community's School Committee. Member of the Budget & Property Subcommittee (2010), the Curriculum Subcommittee (2011) and the Superintendent Search Subcommittee (2010-2011).
During this time I learned a great deal about issues that impact education, including both challenges and opportunities faced by public schools. Among the topics that I studied were funding, enrollment (e.g., impact of school choice, student:teacher ratio…Served a two year term as a citywide representative to my community's School Committee.
