What are the most common criticisms of using economic equity to measure economic success?
In our work, we have seen that equitable economic development practices are plagued by the curse of lowered expectations. The perceived "trade-off" is that by putting equity first in our grants and programs, we somehow start at a deficit when compared to alternative practices. It never ceases to amaze me when people are surprised to realize that efforts to level the playing field simply generate greater community impact -- for everyone. This deficit bias (polite way to say racism) perpetuates a notion that ensuring certain historically underserved populations have equal access somehow comes at the expense of others. When properly executed and measured, it does not.

What are the key differences between public policy and nonprofit careers in Economics?
Generally speaking, I would say that public policy professionals seek (research) to understand the underlying causes and circumstances that lead to specific observable conditions within a specific geography, demographic, or socioeconomic status, e.g., under-educated Black Women in the Southeast have lower lifetime earnings than other groups. Nonprofit economic development, depending upon the structure of the nonprofit (public charity vs. private foundation, for example) and donor intent (if applicable), seeks to affect, through grants and programs, specific outcomes, e.g., funding of college prep courses for young Black Women in the Southeast. The former identifies economic issues and the latter attempts to improve upon them.

Your organization is struggling with employee engagement. How can you turn it around?
We use the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) Traction model for managing our work. Every Monday morning staff meeting begins with a personal recap of the weekend - any fun concerts, activities, movies, hikes, dinners, etc. Then we go around the table (staff of 10) and publicly review personal ROCKS (quarterly goals), and everyone can see and help one another with their priorities. There is individual accountability towards shared goals and outcomes where everyone feels engaged with the process and has a sense of purpose. Once a year, as a team, we determine our annual goals and how they align against our Mission and Values. This method gives individuals autonomy which they appreciate while making them feel vested in the outcomes.

1 Million Cups (1MC) is a simple way to engage entrepreneurs in communities around the world. Each week, the 1MC program offers two local entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their startups to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs. Presenters prepare a 6 minute educational presentation and engage in 20 minutes of feedback and questioning after they present. Entrepreneurs gain insight into possible ways they can improve their businesses, gather realtime feedback, connect with a community that truly cares about their progress, and walk away feeling like they have advanced their business. The audience also learns a great deal from the presentations. Whether this is through passively listening or deeply engaging with the entrepreneurs, there is much to learn every week from these dynamic and diverse communities.
The program takes place every Wednesday morning from 9:00-10:00am in locations all around the country. Visit our "Find an Event" page for a list of locations. Each city runs the program semi-autonomously, and gather in coffee shops, co-working spaces, and even TV stations.
