The title of my doctoral thesis was “Generalized Maximum Entropy, Convexity and Machine Learning”. My research focused on understanding the structure of machine learning models. I studied generalized maximum entropy with relaxed constraints as a tool to help classify machine learning models.

I also did research with colleagues and my advisors on quantile regression using support vector machines and incorporating logic programming into machine learning algorithms.

I am grateful to the ANU and NICTA for supporting my research. The Australian National University, located in Australia's beautiful capital, Canberra, is the country's premier research university. NICTA is a Computer Science lab that sponsored my research while I was simultaneously I was enrolled at the ANU. NICTA's mission is use-inspired research.

Hacker Dojo, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2009. The Dojo brings together entrepreneurs, programmers, and creators in Mountain View, California. We embrace the term “hacker” in the positive sense as describing someone who likes to understand how things work and invent new things. Hacker Dojo's mission is to bring people together around the raw materials required for innovation: space, knowledge, and connectivity.

Hacker Dojo's mission is to bring people together around the raw materials required for innovation: space, knowledge, and connectivity.

The Dojo is one part event space, one part coworking space, and one part community center, and is largely member supported. Since 2010 the Dojo has more than tripled its revenue and membership, which now numbers over 425.

I joined the Dojo as a member in 2010 and was soon recruited to join the Board. After helping the Dojo reincorporate and secure its non-profit status I am now focused on membership and revenue growth, recruiting and mentoring staff, volunteers and resident startups. If you are ever in Mountain View, feel free to stop in and see the Dojo.

    Science and Technology

Haskell is an advanced purely-functional programming language. An open-source product of more than twenty years of cutting-edge research, it allows rapid development of robust, concise, correct software. With strong support for integration with other languages, built-in concurrency and parallelism, debuggers, profilers, rich libraries and an active community, Haskell makes it easier to produce flexible, maintainable, high-quality software.

I have a deep interest in Haskell and started using it professionally at Pingwell. I started Haskell Hackers to help me meet other Haskellers and discuss ways to build better software. The group numbers over 250 members and meets monthly.
