Managing the Hiring Process in a Changing Economy

According to a survey by the National Association of Manufacturers, respondents expect their sales over the course of the next 12 months to grow 3.3 percent on average, up from 2.7 percent in June. Capital spending, exports and employment expectations have also edged higher. However, hiring is lagging behind, with roughly 60 percent of businesses not planning to add to their workforce.

The rapid changes faced by the manufacturing sector over the past few years mirror the hiring challenges faced by so many mid-market businesses today. As the economy improves, how do we manage the hiring process to keep staffing at an optimum level to meet the future needs of the business? Should the firm be hiring contingent or direct workers?
