Organizing for Action (OFA) was instrumental in running President Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012, and after the election did not disband as most campaign groups do. OFA transitioned into helping the President achieve his policy goals during his second term. The way in which OFA used social media to transition from running a campaign to helping the Obama Administration and Democratic Party govern broke new grounds. OFA was able to smoothly transition into the role of an interest group, employing a form of reverse lobbying, expanding the scope of conflict and making mobilization, donation, and expansion easier. The close ties that OFA has with the President and its extensive use of social media, specifically Twitter, means that it doesn’t operate in the exact same manner as a traditional interest group. How is OFA different from a traditional interest group and how does it use Twitter to lobby for the Administration’s policies? This thesis finds that while OFA does operate in a similar manner to most interest groups, it uses Twitter to expand both the scope of conflict and its influence while bypassing some of the barriers that traditional interest groups face.
