    As Coach:
    - I helped people of all levels (from beginners learning how to swim to intermediate who needed to improve technique, to advanced who needed very little guidance) with swimming.
    - What I learnt is that being a very involved coach and knowing the level at which each student is at helped me tailor the training to each person, allowing the most progress.
    - Being able to inspire people who were in their 1st or 2nd year of their degree to people who were much older than me doing their masters or PhD was a challenge I really enjoyed, and made me want to do my best to help them.
    - The most satisfactory part of coaching would be helping the beginners overcome their fear of going in the water, and starting with teaching them how to float on their front, then progress to floating on their back, and slowly teaching them breaststroke and later the other strokes.
    - The most challenging part is to find out the levels of different people and being able to tailor the training to suit each different market.

  • S&OP Processes within New Zealand Organizations: A New Comparative Study

    Global Supply Chain Management Conference

Abstract: Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) has been around for more than 30 years, but only recently have there been formalized framework that companies could follow. Abstract: Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) has been around for more than 30 years, but only recently have there been formalized framework that companies could follow. However, one of the main gaps in our knowledge about S&OP processes is the understanding about its use in different types of companies, and whether the dif-ferent size of the companies plays a role in the way the processes are arranged. S&OP is a methodology for coor-dinating activities between different departments within an organization to ensure smooth operations and profit optimization for the company. A comparative study has been conducted to examine the S&OP framework un-dertaken in the manufacturing and service sectors in small and large companies within New Zealand. Findings indicate that the company size, the product or service, the geography, as well as the enterprise resource planning system are some of the influencers of the S&OP framework. These findings contribute both to the supply chain managers and the executive team within companies in providing insights on what kind of S&OP processes each type of company should undertake, what problems a company may experience within these processes, and the solutions for optimizing these processes to best suit the company.

As a team we had to design a new Coil winding machine (which included designing and testing of a machine and meeting the initial marketing plan) which is complementary to the Company's existing range.

    My role in the team:
Using the Belbin team roles I have found that I tend to be a mixture between a resource investigator, a coordinator and a specialist.
I was good with communicating ideas with supervisors and talking to senior students to research more about the project.

    My role in the team:
Using the Belbin team roles I have found that I tend to be a mixture between a resource investigator, a coordinator and a specialist.
I was good with communicating ideas with supervisors and talking to senior students to research more about the project.
During group meetings (before presentations) I encourage the group to talk about the continuous improvement of the project, ideas for the future and questions we may be asked about
I designed and created the PCB for our groups coil winder, decision making involved determining which component would be most efficient way to input the number of turns into the coil winder, After talking to my lecturer, Ken I decided to go with a digital potentiometer rather than buttons like other groups used, this made our group's machine stand out from rest

This project was the fourth in the series I have undertaking as part of my Bachelors of Engineering degree. The first two were “Investigative” type projects and the third a “Transformative” and "Developmental" project that ended with a set of design specifications.

This project was an “Executive” project. This type of project began with the outputs (deliverables included creating a coil winder) of the investigative & transformative project and focuses on executing those deliverables; hence we started with a clearly stated context, design specifications, deliverables and outcomes. The concepts, idea generation and problem solving techniques which we practiced in the previous projects were essential to this project. There was plenty of opportunity for innovative solutions to the numerous problems that arise during this phase.

As a team we designed a new, cost effective, sustainable, height adjustable desk for the NZ company Furnware. During the project we met with Furnware's operation manager Steve Halpin to discuss the company's needs and also conducted our own research to gather extra information.
I feel that meeting with our clients (people at Furnware) set our group apart from other groups as we found out first hand what both the company and the consumers required.

Lecturer Comments ( Karl Dahm, PhD, BE): Technical assessment 1 was the bridge build. Your team got the top scoring bridge hence the score of 100 (note: final score was in percentage and ranked compared to other teams)

    Notes:
    - There were around ten teams competing.

    Summary:
    - We had to design a bridge of length (200-300mm) from materials provided, we then had to dissemble parts and store in a container (500mm long 50mm wide and 25mm deep). On "Bridge Destruction Day" we had to rebuild the bridge from parts that we made. To test the bridge force was added (and gradually increased) until the bridge fractured

    Points:
    - 1 point for every Newton load X metre span
    - You will be allowed 60 minutes to assemble using only spanners and screw drivers. You will receive a bonus of 50 points for every 5 minutes you complete early.
    - 500 point bonus for correctly predicting the point of fracture of your bridge.

    Materials:
    - Aluminum (Length = 2.5m, Width = 12mm,Thickness = 1.6mm)
    - 'L' shaped beam with similar dimensions as above
    - Unlimited screws

As part of the team I was the Resource Investigator and the Chairperson (Belben Roles) as I was good at making outside contacts (communications aspects of the project), finding information (research aspects), decision making (management aspects). As part of the project I researched on bacteria present in drinking water, created a video presentation, acted as an MC during the presentation. I also gathered information through contacts that I made in other fields such as science, sustainability and planning, technology, communication, veterinary science. I also talked to a Nepalese citizen who gave me insight into current problems and possible solutions for them.
