I try to pull in a relatable, personal story -- which can feel vulnerable. Get out of your comfort zone and let people know who you are, your values and what you stand for. Speaker tip, pick one or two people and look directly at them when you tell your story for greater impact. Don't pace or cast your eye about.

What do you do if your philanthropy board members are becoming disengaged?
If your board member engagement are is waning, it's important to understand why. Don't make assumptions about what's going on. I once had a board member who had institutional commitments and wasn't clear how to help. We were able to discuss this concern and widen her field of vision to include her friends. And when a friend was seeking a place to make a year-end donation -- she realized our organization was an option. Something that would not have happened if we hadn't had an open conversation about her concerns
