Breaking down the project into smaller tasks should be its own step! Planning ahead is critical, but estimation will only be accurate if the project is split into small independent parts. For development, this especially important.

You’re a new manager and your team is struggling. How can you help them turn things around?
The important thing here is separating the root cause and the symptoms. For example, on a development team, the team might be getting overworked at certain times and stressed out. The root cause could be poorly defined requirements, so the scope increases on the back half of every project. You need to roll your sleeves up and help the team through the current workload, but then correctly identify and begin to address the root issue so that it doesn’t happen again.
