A carbonate sedimentologist by academic training, Bill's research interests include combining ecological and paleoecological methodologies to decipher "change" in reef communities through time and space. Using this integrated approach, he has been able to assess the geological and ecological novelty of many of the recent maladies affecting coral reefs. This includes deciphering local anthropogenic signals from overarching global effects. Specific research has included the effects of coral disease and coral bleaching on the trajectories of reef coral communities.

Activities and Societies: President - Geology Club (1976-1978), Assistant - Department of Earth Sciences - Curator of Department's coral collection.

Senior Thesis: Community ecology and comparative sedimentology of L.T.S. Reef, Discovery Bay, Jamaica, W.I.

Bill was first introduced to coral reefs while an undergraduate student at SUNY Oswego in 1978. Combining his love of both geology and ecology, Bill performed his independent senior research project at Discovery Bay Marine Lab in Jamaica under the direction and guidance of his mentor/advisor David J. Thomas.
